The famous Kanjivaram sarees of Tamil Nadu derive their name from the town of Kanchipuram and cherished as one of the most resplendent sarees of all time. These sarees are distinctive for their rich color combinations with wide contrasting borders and also for their fine pure silk which is of a more denser count and has a heavy drape. The skill of the weaver is apparent in the fine zari work and use of various traditional motifs. They use Korvai method of weaving in which different colored yarn for body and border are interlinked with every throw of the shuttle. The sharp color separation of the pallav requires meticulous joining of the differently colored yarns of the warp. The weaving process is therefore slow and tedious.
